"Kalabalık" or "kalabalik" is a word that exists exclusively in Turkish and Swedish, where it means "throng", and "commotion", respectively. It entered the Swedish language after a dramatic incident during the years 1709-14 when the Swedish king Charles XII, following his defeat against Russia at Poltava, lived in and ruled from the Ottoman Empire.
Kalabalık! is also the name of the bulletin of the SRII. Appearing since 2017, it offers a variety of up-to-date information about current activities and scholarships at the institute and its environs, profiles and interviews with its researchers and affiliates, as well as various scholarly reports and articles in both English, Swedish, and Turkish. It is published online, though physical copies of Kalabalık! are printed for local distribution.
As the institute's "fast-track" series of non-peer reviewed contributions, Kalabalık! acts as an informal complement to Transactions and a continuation of the earlier non-peer reviewed publication series' Papers and Skrifter (see Other publications). Thematical collections of contributions to Kalabalık! may still appear as single volumes under the name Papers.
